Best places to see the 2 August 2027 total solar eclipse in Spain — IGN path map, durations (Ceuta 4m 48s) and Strait towns from Tarifa to Sotogrande.
On Monday 2 August 2027, southern Europe hosts a long total solar eclipse. While the Moon’s shadow also crosses North Africa and the Middle East, the far south of the Iberian Peninsula is the only part of mainland Europe inside the path of totality.
Spain reaches up to 4 minutes 48 seconds of total darkness (national maximum in Ceuta, per IGN). For eclipse chasers, the Strait of Gibraltar–Sotogrande corridor is among the most strategic seats on Earth.
Ceuta: Spain’s best seat
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, Ceuta reaches the longest totality in the country: 4m 48s, starting ~10:45 CEST. Tarifa (~4m 39s) and Algeciras (~4m 26s) sit near the centreline; Sotogrande (San Roque) offers ~4m 17s with premium marina access.

The path is about 258 km wide. The centreline runs over the Strait: closer to the axis usually means longer totality.

2027 vs 2028: don’t confuse totality and annularity

Shore vs. sea

The short version: land can buy a few extra seconds at the centreline, but a marina departure from Sotogrande trades those seconds for a clear horizon, no road chaos and the ability to move if cloud forms.

Weather and Strait winds
August is often clear (~85–93% chance on the coast), but:
- Levante: orographic “beard” clouds on the Rock and ridges — sometimes clearer offshore.
- Poniente: drier air, but possible early Atlantic mist (partial starts ~09:41 CEST).
An Alboran Sea flotilla can leave coastal fog banks behind.
Planning tips
- Book lodging early (long weekend 31 Jul–2 Aug 2027).
- Sleep inside the totality path — or arrive by sea.
- 99% is not almost total: only at 100% can you remove glasses and see the corona.
- Use ISO 12312-2 glasses for all partial phases. Naked-eye viewing only during totality (~4m 17s in Sotogrande).
