The IGN chart combines two readings for every point: how long totality lasts and what share of the Sun is covered. The southern band is where the eclipse stays total the longest — up to 4m 48s in Ceuta — while further north only a partial eclipse is visible.

Solar eclipses in Spain: 2027 & 2028

After the 2026–2028 Iberian triad, these are the two eclipses you can still plan for: totality on the Strait (2027) and a ring of fire at sunset (2028).

When is it?

On Monday 2 August 2027, in the morning. Totality begins over the Strait at 10:45:49 CEST. Maximum durations in Spain: Ceuta 4m 48s (national maximum, IGN), Tarifa ~4m 39s, Algeciras ~4m 26s, Cádiz ~2m 56s, Málaga ~1m 57s. At Sotogrande (San Roque / flotilla zone): 4m 17s.

Where to see it

The path enters via the Strait of Gibraltar west to east. It covers Ceuta, Melilla, most of Cádiz, much of the Málaga coast and southern Granada and Almería. It is the only totality visible from mainland Europe in 2027. Seville, Granada city and Córdoba are outside (deep partial only).

What to Bring on the Eclipse Boat Trip

Essentials for your Strait of Gibraltar eclipse cruise from Sotogrande.

  • Passport or ID card

Photo ID is mandatory to board: passport or national ID card. Without it, boarding will be refused.

  • Eco sun protection

Water-resistant, reef-friendly sunscreen, regular sunglasses (not for viewing the eclipse), and a snug cap or hat.

  • Light warm layer

A windproof jacket or thin sweater—during totality the temperature can fall several degrees, plus the sea breeze.

  • Rubber-soled footwear

Boat shoes or comfortable trainers. Avoid heels or stiff soles that slip on deck.

  • Seasickness tablets

If you are unused to sailing, take them about 30 minutes before boarding; roll is stronger when at anchor.

  • Headphones (QR audio guide)

Your own headphones for the QR audio guide, phone at 100%, and a power bank if possible. Camera solar filters are not provided.

  • Towel

Beach or microfibre towel if you plan to swim during eclipse day—before or after the boat trip.

  • Swimwear

Swimsuit under comfortable clothes: in August many guests cool off at the marina or nearby coves.

  • Wonder, joy & enthusiasm

Love for the sky, excitement, and the urge to share it—the extra item that won’t fit in a suitcase… but belongs onboard.

Frequently asked questions

The event, the flotilla, families and private charter — what to know before you book.

What happens on the day?

The flotilla departs from Puerto Sotogrande for a coordinated maritime event around totality. You board with a professional skipper, take position in the viewing area, and share an international brunch on deck. ISO eclipse glasses are included. The experience lasts approximately 3.5–4 hours.

Where do we sail — and will the view be clear?

The planned waters are between Alcaidesa and Sotogrande, typically within about two nautical miles of the coast. The exact track follows the fleet’s operational plan that morning. Totality stands high in the sky, so the hills do not block the sun. On the water you gain a clear horizon, away from shore crowds and haze. Organisation and safety boats support a defined operating area.

What type of boat will I be on?

The fleet mixes sailing yachts and motorboats — the boat is how you join the event, not a private hire you pick from a list. For a shared place, the vessel is assigned according to availability, group size, capacity and the day’s operational plan. Typical shared groups are 6, 8 or 10 guests. Boats in the fleet are typically around 34–50 ft (10–15 m).

Can I book a private boat for my group?

Yes, as a limited private eclipse charter — not as a standard day hire. On 2 August the whole coast is in peak demand: taking a boat out of the shared flotilla for a party of four or six is a different product, and availability is tight. Price depends on vessel, capacity, duration and your brief. We do not publish a fixed private rate. Tell us guest count, preferred yacht type if you have one, and any special requests — we will come back with what can actually be arranged.

Looking for an exclusive boat for your group? Request a Private Eclipse Charter

Can children join? What about babies?

Families are welcome. Children travel with a responsible adult; around age five, most children are comfortable on board. We do not recommend bringing babies, for safety and comfort during a busy event morning.

Why book in advance?

Capacity is finite and international demand for this morning is already high. An Early Bird seat holds your place in the flotilla — brunch, skipper and glasses included — while the operation is still being planned. This is not a walk-up charter.

Can prices change? How long is the pre-sale open?

Yes. Published prices ({adult}€ adult / {child}€ child 4–12) are Early Bird rates until 10 January 2027. Mid season is {mid}€ / 300€ (11 Jan–30 Mar 2027); Standard is {standard}€ / 350€ from 1 April 2027. Booking locks your rate. 30 April 2027 is the cancellation deadline, not the end of Early Bird.

What if the weather affects the view?

Cloud, overcast skies, haze, mist, fog or light rain do not automatically cancel the outing, even when they reduce how clearly the eclipse can be seen. The morning is planned to go ahead whenever conditions remain compatible with safe nautical operation. The skipper and the operator may adjust the route, sailing area, waiting or observation position, and departure or return times if safety requires it. Visibility and nautical safety are not the same: the first may vary; the second always comes first.

Can I cancel because of the weather forecast?

From 30 April 2027 a booking cannot be cancelled or refunded solely because of weather, a poor forecast, cloud, rain, fog or reduced visibility. The experience is scheduled to take place under those conditions when maritime operation remains safe. After that date, exceptions are limited to genuine force majeure — for example death, hospitalisation, a natural catastrophe, a terrorist act, an officially declared state of emergency, or comparable circumstances that truly prevent travel or lawful operation. A weather forecast alone is not force majeure. On the day, maritime safety still governs: the skipper may alter the plan, or not sail, if conditions make safe operation impossible.

How do we watch the eclipse safely?

ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses are included. They are mandatory during every partial phase: never look at the Sun without them while any part of the disc is visible. Only during totality — when the Sun is fully hidden by the Moon — may you look with the unprotected eye, and only for that brief interval. The glasses must go back on the moment totality ends. Each pair carries a QR code with the maker’s instructions; follow those instructions carefully. The glasses do not make unlimited or casual solar viewing safe.

Guests are responsible for following the safety instructions supplied with the eclipse glasses, including the QR guidance. Totality Sotogrande 2027 cannot be held responsible for eye injury resulting from improper use, failure to follow those instructions, or prolonged or inappropriate exposure to the Sun.

Where do we board?

Puerto Deportivo de Sotogrande, Av. de la Marina. The activity starts at 09:00; please arrive one hour before. Booking confirms your seat straight away, and the detailed instructions reach you as the date approaches, along with several email reminders. Groups and the split across vessels are organised once sales close, so your final allocation is confirmed afterwards: exact meeting point and time at the marina, the name of the boat assigned to you and your group, skipper details and everything else you need to board without doubts.
