Observation and photography guide for the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse
Planning, gear, ISO 12312-2 filters, phase-by-phase settings and boat-specific tips for photographing the 2 August 2027 eclipse at Sotogrande.
On 2 August 2027, southern Spain sees a long mid-morning total solar eclipse. Shooting the corona over the Strait from a moving deck needs planning, certified filters and exact contact times. This guide follows the workflow astrophotographers recommend — plan, gear up, shoot by phase and protect your eyes throughout.
1. Plan the eclipse (date, location, duration)
Lock three constants before choosing lenses or support:
- Date: Monday 2 August 2027.
- Location: the totality band crossing the Strait of Gibraltar; Sotogrande / San Roque lies inside with 4m 17s of totality (IGN).
- Spain’s maximum: 4m 48s in Ceuta — the peninsula’s benchmark for this decade.
At Sotogrande the Sun sits ~38.5° high, azimuth ~96° at maximum: side light over the sea, ideal for horizon and reflection compositions.

Closer to the Strait centreline, totality can stretch (e.g. Tarifa ~4m 39s; Ceuta 4m 48s). Use these times as reference and confirm final boat position with the skipper. If your shooting pin is not San Roque town, check C2 and C3 on the IGN map. The flotilla’s sea point is 10:45:49 CEST · 4m 17s — photograph totality from the water.
Priority shots: filtered partial sequence, Baily’s beads and diamond ring at C2/C3, corona during totality (with and without sea horizon), optionally Venus/Jupiter near the eclipsed disc.
2. Recommended gear

On deck, enable IBIS/OIS in active mode and brace against the mast or rail when hand-holding.
3. Solar filters: mandatory during partial phases
During C1→C2 and C3→C4 the partial Sun demands simultaneous eye and sensor protection.
- Only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses; discard scratched or pierced filters.
- On the lens: front ND 5.0 / AstroSolar filter (~16 stops). Ordinary photo ND filters are not safe for direct viewing or full-Sun sensor protection.
- Useless: sunglasses, X-rays, CDs, smoked glass, negatives.
- During totality (C2→C3): remove lens filter and glasses; at the first C3 flash, replace them before looking up.
4. Settings by phase
Partial phase (with solar filter)
- Shutter ≥ 1/1000 s with long glass to freeze motion.
- Aperture f/8–f/11, ISO 100–400 depending on tele and filter density.
- Manual focus on the solar limb; tape the MF ring.
- Spot or evaluative metering; histogram should show the Sun in the upper mid-tones without clipping.
Totality (no solar filter)
- Remove the filter at C2; remount at C3.
- Open aperture (f/4–f/5.6), raise ISO (400–800) and avoid very slow speeds in swell.
- Bracket 5–9 frames (−2 EV to +2 EV) to blend inner and outer corona in post.
- Quick sequence: diamond ring → full corona → Baily’s beads on exit.
5. Shooting from a boat
- Vibration: hull micro-movement favours monopod + bent knees over a tall tripod.
- Sea horizon: Sun at ~38° lets you frame corona plus coastline or flotilla silhouettes.
- Two bodies: leave a wide-angle on intervalometer for the full sequence while you shoot tele during totality.
- Safety: never swap filters while looking at the Sun; lower the camera or use the side screen. The skipper will call contact countdowns.
6. What totality feels like
- Temperature drop of several degrees; wind may ease.
- 360° twilight sky and corona mirrored on the sea.
- Venus and Jupiter near the eclipsed Sun.
- Baily’s beads and diamond ring at C2/C3 — the most critical seconds for filter discipline.
